Fireman’s Ball
In November 1949 Las Damas organized the first Fireman’s Ball. Through the years many much-needed items were purchased for our volunteer firemen and women.
In the beginning it was not uncommon for the Sunset Beach Volunteer firemen to be seen jumping onto the back of the fire truck in flip-flops and board shorts.
Through the years Las Damas funded protective gear and other important basics needed to fight fires in our community. Although we no longer have a volunteer fire department, Las Damas now organizes the Sunset Beach Ball held in November, to carry on this fun event and in honor of those who have served our community.
Art Festival
Las Damas has put on the Sunset Beach Art Festival since 1962.
The original event was the Beachcombers’ Carnival in 1948 that raised funds to purchase the Community Lot and the original Fire Station Building.
Today’s Sunset Beach Art Festival is a well-attended tradition in Sunset Beach. With unique handmade Arts & Craft booths, live music, food booths, children’s activity booth, art gallery and raffles. The grand finale is the announcement of the continuing education grant recipients and the final raffle of the coveted quilt made by community members & quilters immortalizing our community.
The Sunset Beach Art Festival is held every Mother’s Day Weekend in May. Held on 12th Street and N. Pacific Ave. With Art & Craft booths “on the greenbelt” from Broadway to 7th Street.
